Merriwa is our closest neighbour — it sits directly north of Clarkson across Hester Avenue, about two kilometres from our own front door. It was bushland until the late 1980s and then filled out in three clear waves rather than all at once: the Quinns Beach estate at the southern end from the late eighties, the Carnegie estate through the middle in the mid-nineties, and Seagrove at the northern end in the early two-thousands. Baltimore Parade runs the length of it and is how most people navigate the suburb.
Those three waves are close to fifteen years apart, and it shows underground. The oldest southern streets went in first, and early residents were vocal with the council about the standard of the roads, paths and lighting they were given at the time — so the earliest infrastructure here was not laid to the standard the later estates got. Practically, that means a Merriwa job depends heavily on which end of Baltimore Parade you are on. Merriwa also carries far more townhouses and semi-detached homes than the suburbs around it, along with two RAAFA retirement villages, so the housing mix is broader than the usual detached-house street.
Blocked Drains in Merriwa
Where you are in Merriwa changes what we find. In the older Quinns Beach streets at the southern end, the drainage has been in the ground for well over thirty years and the trees planted with those houses are now mature, so root intrusion at ageing joints is the common cause. Up in Seagrove, where the homes are closer to twenty years old, it is far more often wet wipes, fat and build-up.
The townhouses and semi-detached homes add their own wrinkle, because drainage on those blocks is often shared or runs through a neighbouring property, and a blockage in one place shows up somewhere else entirely.
