Mindarie is two kilometres west of us, and it is the most coastal suburb we work in. The Indian Ocean forms its western boundary, the marina and breakwater take up most of the shoreline, and large Quindalup dunes run along the north and south foreshores. Salt is in the air here every day of the year, and it is unforgiving on anything metal left outside — hot water units on exposed walls, external taps, tap spindles, gully grates and irrigation fittings all corrode noticeably faster than the same parts a few kilometres inland.
The other thing worth knowing about Mindarie is what is under it. Before the marina, this land was quarried for limestone from 1932 until 1948 — the restored Coopers lime kilns still stand in Coopers Park. Shallow limestone and caprock are a genuine factor when anything needs digging here, and a trench that would be straightforward on a sand block elsewhere can be a very different job in Mindarie. The housing itself is all post-1988, starting with the marina development and continuing through the northern estate from the late nineties and Catalina in the south from around 2012, so nothing here is old, but the coastal exposure ages things faster than the dates suggest.
